I believe that individuals with disabilities should be able to choose where they live and work. Many of these individuals thrive in agriculturally based vocational and residential programs. The Michigan State Transition Plan claims that Farmstead programs isolate individuals with disabilities from the “community,” without defining what “community” means. Furthermore, it does not assess quality of life for these individuals or current research. It is important that every human is able to choose their “community” instead of being denied opportunities that respect the rights and choices of each individual in a supportive way. Please make Farmstead programs a choice for these individuals.

I believe that individuals with disabilities should be able to choose where they live and work. Some individuals claim that farmstead programs isolate individuals from having a community. However, this is far from the truth. These living and working facilities provide opportunities and people for individuals with disabilities to interact with on a daily basis. They provide a community of similar peers and outside individuals that provide support to people who may otherwise be isolated, feel “different” or left out. Families and individuals who choose these programs weigh many options before deciding what is best for that individual. Allow individuals with disabilities and their families to choose their “community” and not have the government intervene. Please respect the choice of these people and allow farmstead programs to be an option for people with disabilities.
